Billy's POV

I ran to Joel's room and tried to open the now closed door but it wouldn't budge. I could hear soft sobs coming from inside and it killed me.

"Joel?" I asked softly. His sobs paused for a moment but then restarted.

"Joel, are you okay?" I asked he mumbled 'yea' but I could still hear him crying.

"Please let me in." I pleaded. After a moment I heard the lock click. By the time I opened the door he was already laying down on his bed again. I closed and locked the door again.

"What's wrong baby?" I asked him. He was curled up into a fetal position. I spooned myself up behind him and wrapped my arms around him. He leaned back into my chest.

"I'm sorry." He said. I lifted my head up.

"What are you sorry about?" I asked, confused.

"You shouldn't have seen that." He told me, still crying.

"Baby, if anyone should be apologizing here, it should be him apologizing to you. Not you to me. You didn't do anything wrong." I told him softly.

     "But--" He began.

"No buts, my dad isn't perfect by any means." I said. That was a vast understatement.

"He's done this before, ya know. Too many times. But mom keeps letting him back." He confesses to me. I just keep listening and run my fingers through his hair. His sobs have quieted.

"He's never done it in front of anyone before. Benji and I don't really have much company over. That was really embarrassing." He said blushing.

"Don't ever be embarrassed in front of me, especially about someone else. He should be embarrassed for hurting you." I told him.

     "Yea?" He questioned.

"Yea. And besides... soon you get to see how fucked up my family is. It'll make you feel a lot better about yours." I told him. He laughed.

"Okay, Let me pack and we can get out of here. I don't wanna stay any longer." He said. I nodded and he began packing.

*A little later*

"Mom, We're leaving. I'll see you after school tomorrow." Joel yelled, his voice was still shaky from crying.

"Bye sweetie." She said kissing him. She turned to me. I knew she was going to apologize again just by the look on her face.

"Don't, Mrs. Madden. Don't worry about it." I said and she smiled.

"Thanks. And it's Katie to you, young man." She said. She hugged me and told me it was nice to meet me.

Joel and I left the house and began walking to my house. It was only 2 blocks down. After we left his doorstep he grabbed my hand and I turned to look at him. He smiled and I smiled back, but quickly looked down.

"This is weird for me too Billy, it's ok." He said. I blushed and laughed.

"Am I that obvious?" I asked.

"No.." He laughed and stopped. "Yea." He corrected. I closed my eyes but quickly opened them again.

"I'm sorry. But I've never had a girlfriend before, much less a boyfriend. I'm only 14, ya know? It's not exactly the ideal age to discover that you're gay." I said. He nodded.

"I know. I mean come on, I'm only 16. I've had a girlfriend before, but I couldn't stand her so I never saw her. We never even kissed. It just feels different with you though. I don't feel uncomfortable." He admitted. I gripped his hand tighted. After a moment I responded.

"Well prepare for that to change." I said and he laughed.

"So I'm gonna be uncomfortable at your house?" He questioned.

"Only when my family's around. Not when we're alone." I said, not thinking about how that could be taken. He understood what I meant.

"Well then, I guess we'll have to avoid them huh?" He said. I nodded.

"I'm good at that one." I told him. We arrived at my doorstep.

     "It's weird." He commented.

     "what is?" I asked him.

"I've known you for less than a day, and already I can relate to you more than I even have to anyone." He told me.

"I know the feeling. Trust me." I told him and after squeazing each other's hands, we reluctantly let go and I opened the door.

I have no idea what to expect once we get inside.
